You’re probably well aware of the financial benefits of group bookings when travelling with a bunch of friends, your sports team, or your community group, but have you stopped to think about the social benefits too? When booking into a decent-sized hostel, you’ll be able to make the most of travelling in a group when you get to enjoy sharing a dorm with your friends instead of strangers. Let’s face it – while the majority of travellers in backpacker hostels are all cool people with great stories to tell, every now and then you just want to spend time with people you already know. Well, thanks to travelling in a group, the only strange people you’ll have to deal with are the ones you already know!
There’s a lot of fun to be had in travelling with friends, and there’s nothing like rolling back to your backpacker hostel together after a day of sports or community fun and being able to chat and continue the day’s enjoyment in your dorm room too. So just remember that when you’re booking your hostel stay that if you book as a group you’ll be able to share a room and facilities with friends rather than strangers, making the appeal of group accomodation even stronger.

Many backpackers come to Brisbane in the hope of getting work to help fund further travels. Your backpacker hostel is a great starting point on your job search – many have noticeboards with all kinds of information, including casual work opportunities. Also talk to your fellow backpackers who may have done it themselves, or have some helpful tips or ideas.
Look online
Australian job search websites such as Seek, My Career and Career One list hundreds of jobs every day, as do other sites like All Jobs, Job Seeker, and Jobs Jobs Jobs. The Brisbane Gumtree website is also a resource for jobseekers, where you can either search for job ads or post an ad about yourself as someone who is looking for work.
Apply in person
Sometimes it’s easier to walk around and hand over your resume in person at businesses that catch your eye and where you think your skills are suited. As well as giving your potential employer the opportunity to meet you in person, it allows you to do a little research about your potential workplace. If you do apply in person, make sure you present yourself well – dress nicely and speak clearly and confidently. Show off your great English-speaking skills if English is your second language.
Resume tips
When submitting your resume, ensure that your name and contact details are clearly listed at the top. If you don’t yet have an Australian mobile number, mention that in your cover letter and assure the reader you will regularly check your emails. You may also wish to clearly state the conditions of your visa and how that may impact on your ability to work, who you can work for, and what hours or timeframes are suitable. This will ensure the recruiter understands your needs, and won’t waste your time unnecessarily.

Many backpackers passing through Brisbane migrate slowly north. Bundaberg is a popular next destination along the east coast of Queensland, with its lovely beaches, green hinterlands and providing access to the Great Barrier Reef.
There are a few ways to get to the land of rum.
Standard: Get a Bus
Greyhound runs three buses daily to Bundaberg (7.5 hours), with a backpacker ticket costing $92. If you plan to do a lot of bus travel, consider buying a bus pass to help save money.
Scenic: Take a Train
Two trains run from Brisbane to Bundaberg – the Tilt Train (4.5 hours) and The Sunlander (6-7 hours). The Tilt Train offers economy ($60-$75) and business ($90-$105) tickets. Business brings extra space, a power point to charge electronics and a complimentary newspaper or magazine and juice upon boarding. It runs twice-daily except for Saturdays.
The Sunlander is one of the World’s Top 25 Rail Journeys as chosen by the Society of International Railway Travellers. It features separate dining, lounge and club cars. Choose between the economy ($56-$75) or economy sleeping berth ($126) ticket. The Sunlander runs three days a week on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Quick: Catch a Plane
Qantas generally runs four or five flights daily on weekdays, and three daily on weekends. Prices can vary greatly, but tend to start from $110 – though if you’re lucky you might catch a sale flight. This is great if you want to get there quickly, as it’ll take just 55 minutes. No other airlines fly to Bundaberg.
Independent: Hire a Car
If you have a group of people and would prefer to drive yourself, keep in mind that a one-way car hire usually costs more than if you return the car to the city you hired it in. Get prepared with a map or include a GPS in the rental package. Contact a car hire company such as Abel-Rent-A-Car for a quote.

With just a handful of organised bridge climbs around the country, Brisbane boasts its own spectacular Story Bridge Climb. Even just walking across the iconic Story Bridge – connecting Kangaroo Point to the city and Fortitude Valley – you’ll have fantastic views, so imagine the sight when you scale the summit reaching 80 metres high. With 360 degree panoramic views, witness the winding Brisbane River wrap its way around the cityscape, past soaring cliffs, green parks and the glistening high-rises of the CBD. You’ll see all the way to Moreton Bay, the Gold Coast Hinterlands, the Glasshouse Mountains and surrounds. Led by an experienced guide with commentary, climbs include a briefing and safety demonstration, and last about 2.5 hours.
The Story Bridge Adventure Climb
This is the traditional climb that locals and tourists alike have come to love over the years. The journey is nearly a kilometre long. The experience varies greatly depending purely on what time of day you wish to climb: dawn, day, twilight, or night. The hard part is deciding what kind of lighting you’d like on your bird’s eye experience of Brisbane. For the click-a-holics out there, consider the special Photography Climb – the only organised bridge climb in the world where you can take your camera with you to the top. Photography Climbs run on set dates only.
The Story Bridge Abseil Climb
Just recently launched, the Story Bridge Abseil Climb scales the bridge in much the same fashion as the original climb – until you have to come back down. Whilst you can’t glide down from the very top, from just below road level you will abseil 30 metres down the Anchor Pier, all the way to the green grass of Captain Burke Park. This one’s for the adrenalin-seekers out there.
